WHALE SIGHTINGS 2011

Humpbacks generally travel through King George Sound on their way north and Southern Right whales will generally spend weeks just off the coast. At times staying in the same area for 6 to 8 weeks just hundreds of meters from shore.
We have tried to give you an idea of where the whales were sighted. This will enable you to relate it back to our map. Please note that these whales were close to the boat unless otherwise stated. We do not count whales further than 400 meters from the boat.
At times although we know their may be whales in another area, we may stay with the whales we have found because of weather or the possibility of a close interaction with those whales.

No Cruises as strong winds hit the coast. Winter is here. "Better to be on land wishing to be at sea than to be at sea wishing to be on land"

am

A bit of a cruise today out to the Islands and around the south side of Breaksea Island and then north towards Nanarup Beach. We find them between the islands which is good as the north easterly winds are increasing. 3 humpbacks found, 1 adult and 2 juvenile.

9-June-11

am

3 humpback whales found close to Limestone Head. The small one in the pod throws its self out of the water backwards several times and cameras scream hoping to capture the moment in time.

8-June-11

No cruise today because of weather.

7-June-11

am

We found the whales about 30 minutes after leaving the marina, the young whale with the white on the right side of his tail. Breached as we approached and then cam to swim around us. We left him and after he traveled out to more exposed waters. South Easterly winds make today a bit ordinary. We head back to hug the coast and find 2 young whales rolling around over each other. We stick with them for about 45 min and then head home with the wind helping us.

6-June-11   am  All the humpback whales today out wide today traveling in pairs. 6 juveniles in all. But more whales out deep.
  5-June-11 am

Calm conditions today and we find a quiet young Humpback whale. too quiet so we head off to several blows seen in the distance. 2 Humpbacks playing at times swimming close. 1 breached but no pic sorry.
4-June-11   am

Heading straight out to Limestone Head we caught up with our first humpback  whale a juvenile, the top right hand side of his tail was white, making it easy to see as he takes a dive. Next we find 2 adults traveling then a pod of 5 young whales come up behind us. As we watch them disappear another 3 adults come in from out deep. All pretty quiet but at times very close. All in all a good day :)

3-June-11 am

Heading out today for our first whale watching cruise for the year. Found 2 juveniles humpbacks firstly. Just off Limestone Head. We followed them until they rounded Bald Head

We headed out to Breaksea Island and checked on some New Zealand Fur seals then in towards Goode beach, finding 2 adults and a juvenile heading towards Bald Head. These guys were a little more active we stayed with them for a while and then as we headed to Mistaken Island we came across 1 adult very quiet. We left him after just 10 minutes and headed home.
