WHALE SIGHTINGS 2007

Humpbacks generally travel through King George Sound on their way north and Southern Right whales will generally spend weeks just off the coast. At times staying in the same area for 6 to 8 weeks just hundreds of metres from shore.

We have tried to give you an idea of where the whales were sighted. This will enable you to relate it back to our map.

3 Humpbacks travelled from seal rock past mistaken island and could be seen from Marine Drive at 0830 hours. We found them at ledge point at 0945 hours heading towards Limestone head at 12 km/ph. 5 Humpbacks travelled in to sound along the southern side of Breaksea island as we headed home.

3 Humpbacks came from Michaelmas Island and travelled to Seal Rock. Several breaching whales seen 3 to 4 km further east.

5 Juveniles on the line between Limestone Head and Breaksea Island, breaching. 2 Southern Rights reported at two peoples Bay.

7 Whales in King George Sound. We followed 2 Juveniles from Michaelmas Reef to Limestone Head. At time they swam around the boat giving great photos.

Travelled to Nanarup because of reports of Southern Rights in the area. Travelled to tumbledowns but no whales seen. A False Killer was found on Outer Brambles and it will be taken to Whale World tomorrow to be buried so the skeleton can be displayed in the future.

27th June

At 0930 hours 4 whales were spotted from Marine Drive by our spotter Bernie. Leaving the jetty we headed out to find them inside the islands and heading towards Seal Rock. All were Juveniles but had split into 2 pairs. We left them as they headed to Goode Beach.

Whales were seen at Middelton Beach. The main swimming beach of Albany.

As we cruised from Limestone head to Breaksea Island, Humpbacks were seen breaching some 4 km south east. Arriving to the whales still breaching, one of our passengers got some great shots of a humpback in full flight. We stayed for some time with more whales further out to sea also putting on a display.

Whales were seen off Limestone Head but couldn’t be found buy the time we arrived. After heading out to the islands a small humpback was seen but didn't really want to play with us.

Strong winds 25 to 30 knots with 50 knot gusts forecast. No Cruise today.

5 Humpbacks reported at Whale-world early this morning. We found 3 north of Seal Rock and they were very hard to watch at the start as they were traveling erratically. 1 headed east to catch a distant pair and then the 2 that remained headed towards Limestone Head as they would normally.

On the way to the boat traveling  Marine Drive, 1 Humpback was seen at the fairway marker. Leaving the jetty Bernie called in to say the whale was inside Princess Royal Harbour, close to the wood chip berth. We followed it out of the harbour towards Skippy Reef.

Whales were seen at Nanarup but we spent some time looking but could not find anything.

2 Humpbacks were seen traveling over Michaelmas Reef towards Skippy reef. After spending time getting some good photos for the passengers we left to find 1 juvenile Humpback off Good Beach. At times it swam very close to the boat much to the delight of all on board.

A phone call from Whale-world at 1530 hours, alerted us that several whales were heading towards Mistaken Island from Seal Rock. A short drive up to Marine Drive and it was easy to see at least 10 Humpbacks in several different pods heading to the base of Marine Drive look out. They were last seen on the northern side of King George Sound at Basket Bay

After yesterdays effort We cruised today and although winds were forecast to reach 20 knots from the north east we enjoyed light winds from the north for most of the day. We did not however find any whales although we did cover a little over 50 km. Reports from local CALM office that 2 humpbacks were seen today at Little Beach/ Two Peoples Bay.

With strong Easterlies forecast for today and no whales being sighted over the past few days we decided not to cruise today. Is it not always the way, 2 Humpback Whales were spotted off Limestone Head from about 1130 hours to 1630 hours and at times breaching and clearly seen from Marine Drive.

Cruised past Mistaken Island, through Frenchman Bay past Seal Rock, Limestone Head out to Breaksea Island over to Nanarup Beach and back to Middelton Beach, a round trip of over 50 km and only Short Toothed Whales (Bottlenose Dolphins) and New Zealand Fur Seals spotted.

traveling  through Frenchman bay and out towards Michaelmas island when the call came that 2 Humpbacks had been spotted back towards town and traveling  slowly west. Heading in we found what appeared to be cow and yearling traveling together back towards Mistaken Island. We stayed with them for some time and most passengers were able to get good tail shots and at times a good close look.

While sitting up on Marine drive waiting for an 1600 hours appointment I spotted 2 Humpbacks at the fairway marker in King George Sound. I was joined by Bernie who said he had seen 3 Humpbacks earlier and thought that 1 was a young calf. (Unusual for this time of year)
