WHALE SIGHTINGS 2008

Humpbacks generally travel through King George Sound on their way north and Southern Right whales will generally spend weeks just off the coast. At times staying in the same area for 6 to 8 weeks just hundreds of metres from shore.

We have tried to give you an idea of where the whales were sighted. This will enable you to relate it back to our map.

12th October am Today a report of a stranded Minkie whale was received by CALM. The 5 metre whale was on the southern shore of Princess Royal Harbour. After several hours and with a incoming tide the whale was free at around 1030 hours but CALM  staff had trouble keeping the whale from once again stranding itself again. The whale was observed by CALM and was last seen making its way into the deeper waters of King George Sound.
11th October am A Southern Right cow and calf spotted at the entrance to Princess Royal Harbour. Seen later in the afternoon east of Mistaken Island and heading towards Bald Head on their way home to Antarctica.

9th October   After a coastal flight reports have come back that all the whales spotted except 1 were Southern Right cows and calves. The exception was a young Humpback that is interacting with a Southern Right. Also spotted was 1 cow that has  2 calves.  Three dead Sperm whales on a beach east of Augusta and a dead Southern Right calf was seen east of Bremer Bay.
